Arlingham - Golding / Goulding
« on: Monday 13 December 10 19:24 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

I am asking a big favour here so if no one can help I understand.

I have a lot of relatives with the above name(s) who lived in Arlingham from the mid 1600s through to the 1800s.  Some of them were buried in the St Marys churchyard / cemetery.  I don't know yet what other cemeteries existed and who of them were buried there.   I wondered if there is anyone who lives close to St Marys can possibly get photos or a note of inscriptions from any gravestones still standing or any other information that may be available from the church there.   All these people are related but I haven't been able to tie a lot of them in and am hoping the insciptions or other info there might help.

I am willing to pay for any expenses incurred on my behalf.

thanks

Hi - I live in Arlingham. Are you aware of the two excellent historical books about the village and its inhabitants? Goulding was and still is a common name around here so I am sure there will be details of some of them within the books.

My friend contributed to and published these books so if you are not familiar with them I will see if he has any still available if you like.

Thanks to you all for your replies.

Chris and NDRFT - while the websites don't have any Gouldings (yet) they do have several other names of interest and I will be spending some time investigating them.   Also haven't had the time to google yet but now it is the weekend I will be doing that as well.   Appreciate your help.

Chris - no I am not familiar with them and yes I would be interested in those books as my maiden name is Goulding and many of my direct line and their siblings came from there through the 1600/1700s and beyond.   So if your friend has them available or knows where I could get a copy please let me know.  Thank you for letting me know about these as there are so many different things out there it is often hard to know which would be the most beneficial and of interest.

Again thank you all for your help.

Hello Lyraea

I see you are in New Zealand, so I guess you might not be able to visit Arlingham, which is a most beautiful place.

You might have found these pictures already, but I don't want you to miss them !

The church:

The village:

There are a lot of photos of graves on the same website, belonging to members of particular families obviously, but will give you some idea.

The books Chris mentions are quite exceptional. We had a look at  them in the church this summer, but unfortunately couldn't get hold of them to buy. I would have loved to have them though.

Sandra, is that you? It's Annie from the Hibbitt Family History website - we've conversed in the past. We're related on the Pitcher side although it's mainly my Fryer line which appear in Arlingham.

Although I haven't added them onto my tree yet, I believe an Elizabeth Goulding married into my Taysum line in 1776 so perhaps we're related through the Gouldings as well as the Fryers and Pitchers. You can see a monument to them inside the church at http://hibbitt.org.uk/gallery/graves___memorials/arlingham__gloucestershire_-_st_mary_the_virgin%27s_church___churchyard/0118/

I have a pdf file of the Arlingham MI's. There are one or two Gouldings...

(76) In memory of / JAMES, son of SAMUEL and / ELIZABETH GOULDING, of
this parish, / who was unfortunately drowned in the River / Severn,
June 15th 1807, aged 10 years. / [6 lines of verse]. / The above
SAMUEL GOULDING, died Augst. / 19th 1848, aged 74 years. / Also of
ELIZABETH, his widow, who died / June 1st 1853, aged 76 years.
(* 76).
Headstone with gently curved top; urn and floral design; inscription
incised; red sandstone.

The others are 20th century MI's.

Thank you Anne for your kind remarks about my website. It's a labour of love. I never expected to enjoy family history so much when I started off with a 14 day free trial at Ancestry less than 4 years ago.

Sandra, are you aware of the Forest of Dean Family History site at: http://www.forest-of-dean.net - some of the 19th century parish records for Arlingham are online there including a number of Goulding/Golding entries.

I have lots of photographs of the Arlingham parish records which I and another Fryer descendant took of some of the films you can order from Family History Centres. I don't say that I have every single page because we were looking for specific names but your Gouldings may appear on our photos. I'm happy to take a look if you have a specific request but you'll need to give me a timescale as these pictures are indexed in chronological order only.
