Louis Selig
« on: Tuesday 14 December 10 22:47 GMT (UK) »
Just a ramble this as I would be interested in any ideas people may have about this puzzle-
My 2x G Grandmother Fanny Selig was born in 1846 in Liverpool, father Louis Selig mother Mary Selig(maiden name not clear), Louis Selig is on 1851 census at hotel in IOM. I have been unable to find Fanny, Mary and sibling on 1851. In 1858 Louis  Selig Kusel marries Rebecca Kusel according to rites of Jewish Religion at 44 Lime Street , Liverpool. On 1861 census Louis is living with Mary and family at 44 Lime Street and on subsequent census is with Mary. I have been unable to find a Rebecca Kusel on any census, birth or death index so I'm stumped. The only thing I can think of is that Mary should take on the name Rebecca for a Jewish wedding. Is this likely to have happened? :D

Hi

Louis Selig Kusel married Rebecca Selig Kusel which is strange so I wonder if a change of surname was involved as well

It may have been a second marriage to each other but within the Jewish faith but I can't find the first one on freebmd

Also in 1858 there is a marriage for David Selig Kusel but in East London

The 1851 IOM census shows Louis Selig as unmarried aged 34 occ merchant so are you sure you have the right entry?

Can you scan Fanny's birth cert and then trim it until just her mothers name and maiden name is showing and post it here so we can see if a marriage can be found

What occupation is shown for Louis on her birth cert

Hi

I have just found the 1871 entry where Louis Selig Kusel is visiting brother David Selig Kusel

Louis is a commercial traveller and shown as married

Carole - I can't scan in the certificate tonight will have to do it tomorrow
Louis is a commercial traveller on Fanny's birth certificate and describes himself as a merchant on the marriage certificate. :)

Thanks Carole for your input what I am trying to get my head round is would Mary have been likely to have taken on a Jewish Name to marry Louis according to the rites of the Jewish faith and then reverted to her original name after the marriage. It may be that they were first married in Germany which is why there is no marriage on free bmd but if so would they describe themselves as bachelor and spinster :)

Mary was born in London so I can't see there being a marriage in Germany somehow - although it's not impossible

A David Selig landed at Hull 30.5.1837 from Hamburg - no other details shown - but brother David was only b 1821

Were there any laws at that time that prevented an "alien" from marrying until he became naturalised?  That's the only other thing I could think of

Carole, I hadn't thought about that . He became naturalised in 1853 so it is a possibility I can explore. Thank you so much
