Re: Regular Soldier and post-war discharge procedure

Afternoon,

I've been trying to locate my Great grandfather's WW1 service record for a number of years now without success, and had accepted that it was most probably destroyed during the WW2 bombing raid.

However, I have recently discovered that his regt. no, indicates that he signed up as a regular in September 1913 in Bordon, Hampshire.

He eventually died from his injuries in 1934 (Gas-induced), but I'm now wondering what the chances are of him having continued in the army post-war, therefore opening up the possibility that his records survive....

He never received a war pension I am told, so this being the case, might he have been deemed still fit for service, and if so, would he have had to have served out the remainder of his service, presuming this did not end until after the end of the war?

Any advice would be appreciated thanks

Did want to be too presumptuous in posting details etc, so thanks, here goes:

Pte. Joseph Bennett (later Sgt. acting WOII), b. 1892, Swansea
Regt No. 11053, South Wales Borderers
Date of Entry into Theatre: 10/10/1914


He started with the 1st Bn in September 1913, and, according to his medal roll, was with the 2nd in on the 11/11/1918. The medal roll states he was with 'Special Reserve' at the time.

Medal roll states he was a CSM,later promoted to 'Acting WO11'.

I have trawled the online Ancestry records in the hope I'd find him, but to no avail.

If he stayed on after the war then his records would not be on Ancestry as they would have not been in the same archive.  It might be worth trying the Army pensions people.  Might also be worth trying http://www.rrw.org.uk/museums/index.htm as they became part of the Royal Regiment of Wales and they may have between wars records....

If he served continuously for any period after the war, I would have expected to see a seven digit service number on his medal card. There was a change of system in August 1920.
