Can someone date these photos please?
« on: Tuesday 21 December 10 22:55 GMT (UK) »
A couple of family photos (we think). We're not absolutely sure who these photos are of so if anyone could give a rough date it would be very helpful! Unfortunately the first is in a terrible condition but hopefully somebody will be able to work it out! The back of the second is a post card. Thank you for any help! :)

Sorry about the size! Don't know how to make them smaller. Also, is the baby a boy or a girl?

The first one, about 1905-1908 or so. The second, impossible to date but I can tell you that it is definitely a boy or a girl :D

To resize, go to the Edit Photo function in your photo editor, and resize. Do not compress, resize. But if you'd like this lovely photo restores, it's a decent size physically, and just under the 500kb max allowed by the website. So if you ask for a restore, you may get some nice results.

For restoration, go back to the first post in the thread, and Modify to include the word Restore in the title.

The second photo, the only clue would be whether or not it has a dividing line down the middle of the postcard.

Cheers,

Forgot...one thing you might do for restoration is rescan it at one setting higher. That would put it over the 500kb max allowed, but then if you cropped off the backing material you'd get back under 500kb.

Hi Hwilson, sorry to butt in on your thread  :)

China, What clue does the dividing line on a postcard photo give?  I have lots of postcard photos so I would be very interested to know.

Thanks

Thank you! :) Yes the baby photo is quite plain. I just checked the original and it does have a dividing line on the back, what does this mean?

Another photo (sorry!), we think this is one of two people (due to a note on the back). Again it's a postcard, with a dividing line although the back looks a bit plainer than the last one. I was also wondering about the set up to this photo, the background looks a bit grander than I imagine the lady's life would have been?

Well...I'd say about 1910-1914 or so...the suffragette suit came out in 1910 and lasted sort of till the war. Maybe in the later part of the time frame, because the v-neck collar started in about 1913-1914ish.

The dividing line...(Hi Jools) indicates a postcard produced after 1902. The postcard as a photo became popular around 1900 or so, but no message was allowed to be written on it....address only. After 1902 the card was divided to allow space for a message, and early divided cards often (or maybe all of them, I don't know) had a printed notification that a message was now permitted.

It took a bit longer in the US, I think 1905 or 7.

Cheers,

Thank you! Very interesting. Can I just ask if you know anything else about the outfit/background?
