Emigrants to South Australia from Estate of Montagu Chapman Castle Killua
« on: Wednesday 22 December 10 05:39 GMT (UK) »
Ihave just discovered by reading a newspaper article from 1847 that my relative x4 great grandmother Mary Garrigan was recruited from the tenants of the estate of Sir Montagu Chapman and sailed in "The Trafalgar" for Adelaide South Australia in 1847. It also appears that he sponsored people on the Aboukir which was the ship her husband William Plunkett came on. I know not much about them as there is very little documentary evidence here so was thrilled with finding the article. (Search NLA Australia Trove for many newspapers from early days..a free site though you have to register and more is being put on all the time).
Could anyone please assist me by
1) Giving me more details about Sir Montagu Chapman...there does not seem to be much on the Web
2) Suggesting where I might find any records for these two assuming they came from nearby to Castle Killua.

They were married in the Catholic Church in Adelaide in 1849.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated...and for any Australian research do try the NLA Trove newspaper site.

Regards and thanks   Sue :)

There are some details on the civil parish of Killua/Killoah included in Samuel Lewis' Topagraphical directory of Ireland, 1837 - see Page K 6  (Library Ireland)

Also mentioned is Killua Castle and a Sir T. Chapman - maybe part of the same family.

Killua is also a townland of 935 acres, within the same civil parish.

The RC parish which includes the townland, and civil parish, is Clonmellon, and details appear to go back to the 1750s with some missing dates. For details on dates and locations for records see : Clonmellon RC Parish (Irish Times)

Do you know when the newspaper article was actually written? I found a Montague Chapman (only one in Ireland) in Co. Westmeath in 1907 but he was born c1853. Am wondering if the article was written well after 1847 while Montague was the landlord and perhaps it was his father or another relative who arranged the journey to Australia in 1847.
This looks like Montague in 1901 census - indexed as Morton  ::)

This seems to be your Montague Chapman:

there seems to be typos in both those links ... I think maybe the first one should read

  http://multitext.ucc.ie/d/involvement_of_landlords

and the 2nd (which aghadowey posted earlier)

  http://familypedia.wikia.com/wiki/Sir_Montagu_Lowther_Chapman_(1808-1853)

(removed the www off both, and the ... in the 2nd)
