1851 Census Lookup Please - WITENTON (?)
« on: Sunday 26 December 10 16:20 GMT (UK) »

Hello RootsChatters:

Could someone please take a look at the 1851 Census for a Maria WITENTON in the Ockley/Abinger area. She married a Frederick LONGHURST in Ockley in 1856 and died in 1860.

I couldn't find a birth/baptism for her in the IGI using several different name variants. There is a marriage for a Thomas WHITTINGTON & Maria LAMBERT in 1833 in Leatherhead, but I didn't see a child that would 'match'.

Many thanks in advance.

Regards, Bernard

Hi Bernard

I think I have found your family, although it did take awhile.

Mary Ann Whitten born Abinger, surrey in 1936, christened
15th May 1836 at Lambeth, Surrey.

Her parents were John Whitten born about 1816 and mother Priscilla
born about 1820.

On the 1841 census Mary has a few siblings who include
John aged 9
Priscilla aged 7
Mary Ann who is 5 **
and Elizabeth aged 1.
They are living at White Hart Place, Lambeth

On the 1851 census she is living away as a servant aged 17

hope this helps you

regards

Hi Sandymc

I think you might be right. Several years ago I noted an Abinger birth for her, but I lost the source.

Many thanks for your help.

Regards, Bernard

Hi - I know this post is very old but wondered if you had considered the baptism of
Mary Whittington baptised 14 Feb 1836 in Dorking - parents George and Rebecca
If you look deeply into the palm of your hand, you will see your parents and all generations of your ancestors. All of them are alive in this moment. Each is present in your body. You are the continuation of each of these people. (Thich Nhat Hanh)
