1861 Census Bridgnorth
« on: Thursday 30 December 10 13:31 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for Thomas and Sarah Cockin in the 1861.  They married in 1860 at the BNorth register office they are living at 33 Cartway in 1871.  I cannot find a record of them in 1861.  Sarah nee Evans parents lived in the Cartway at number 29 (The Coopers Arms).  Were there missing parts of this census for that area.

Hi Paul,

I'm having trouble spotting them in 1871: where and when were they born?

Hi Tati,

I see Paul is off line so perhaps I could answer you.

I believe Paul has been looking for Thomas and Sarah on the 1861 census for at least five years. I don't believe they are in Bridgnorth town.

In 1871 they are at 33 Cartway, Bridgnorth.
RG10/2742  1+ Enum. District 2.  Folio 25B.

Sarah COCKIN, Head, Married, age 30, Charwoman, born in Leeds, Yorkshire.
With four children including Addison, age 10, born in Bridgnorth.

Thomas isn't with his family in 1871.
Paul has previously told me that Thomas COCKIN was b. Darlaston 1837.

Hope it helps.
Gwynne

How about these 2 then? I realise Sarah's birth place doesn't match but have they been ruled out?

1861
RG9/2010 14 23
Darlaston, Staffordshire
Willenhall St

Thomas Cockin, head, 24, Gun Lock Filer, b. Darlaston
Sarah, wife, 20, b. do.

Addison wasn't born I suppose - his birth wasn't registered until the December quarter.

Added: I see Thomas was a Gun Locksmith in 1881 so the occupation seems to match.
Also, Thomas is a Lock filer in 1871 at Darlaston, RG10/2955 42 12

Hi Tati
As you can see Gwynne knows me well and I have to say helped me a great deal with Sarah in later life.  He pointed me to an article in the times about her killing one of her daughters, accidntly but I unearthed all the court papers, which was facinating.  Thanks for that Gwynne. Sorry I am straying from the original question.  Can I look at this census on Ancestry as there doesn't seem to be a way of putting the RG numbers in.
Thanks Paul

Yes there is, if you use old search :)

Maybe this will take you there directly:

Have you been able to find Thomas before his marriage at all?

(Just asking because I was wondering whether the family were called Wood on earlier censuses.)

Deat Tati
I can't believe it, how on earth did you find them.  I looked on the 1861 census on Find my past and they have their name as Cockier.
I am so grateful to you.  I shall take a look at the 1871 census now.
Thank you so much.

Paul
