1851 census lookup please
« on: Thursday 14 April 05 19:25 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find where Alexander Todd and his family were living in 1851 and 1841. His wife was Elizabeth and he had the following children:

Alexander born abt 1827
Stephen abt 1831
John abt 1837
Maria abt 1838
Elizabeth abt 1839
Robert abt 1845

They seem to have moved around Kent quite a bit as Stephen was married in Canterbury, John in Ramsgate and Maria in Sittingbourne.

Any help in tracking them down would be much appreciated

Hi

I have a note that Alexander TODD appears in a census for Birchington - no further details at present.

If so, it's quite surprising with the TODDs being travellers as there was no requirement to list those not living in houses prior to 1861 and they don't often appear in the early Kent census returns.

This family is of interest to me also with a number of my family marrying into them:

Stephen TODD married Sarah Ann BAKER (sister to my gt gt grandmother.

Elizabeth TODD married John TAPPENDEN (brother to my gt gt gt grandfather)

Best wishes

Thanks for that information.  Stephen Todd is my gt gt grandfather.  The Todds are proving a difficult line to follow.  Several family members have nidicated that they came originally from Scotland, but I have not been able to verify this yet.  Alexander Todd seemd to be a fairly common name in parts of Scotland, so it may be true.

Do you have any further information on Sarah Baker?  All I know from her marriage certificate is that her father's name is George.

Regards
BH

Hi BH

Sarah BAKER was the daughter of George BAKER & Sarah Ann KING who married in Canterbury.  I do have the details somewhere, probably Sarah's baptism too, but will have to dig them out sometime (paper records!).  My gt gt grandmother was Susan Ann (sometimes known as Ann) BAKER - sister to Sarah.  Susan married William TAPPENDEN and remained in Canterbury.

You will find census entries for George & Sarah 1841-1871

With regards to Alexander TODD, I'm not sure about any Scottish connection.  Like you say, the name Alexander TODD is more common in Scotland but whether he had any ancestry there I don't know.

Best wishes

Thanks for that information.  It has given me somewhere to start with the Baker family.

The Todds may prove a little more of a challenge.  Are you interested to know if I find out any more?

Best Wishes

Hi

I have sent you a PM - perhaps we can try and work out just which TODD references each of us has  ???  Will also try and find the time to sort out the baptisms for children of George & Sarah BAKER.

Best wishes

Hi Carol,

Thanks for that information.  That places them still in the same parish as where they got married.   I just need to find them in the 1841 census now, then it's back to the parish records.

Many thanks
Barbara

Hi Barbara,
I've checked through St Mildreds parish on the 1841 census, but can't find Alexander and family. Looking at the ages and birthplaces of the children, they should be in Canterbury somewhere, but as they seem to have been a bit nomadic in the past, I suppose they could be anywhere.
Happy hunting,
xx Carol.
