Hi Richardsoz,

According to http://www.devonruralarchive.com/Wembury.html  Thomas Lockyer was a Plymouth Merchant, but this does not necessarily mean he was born or married in Plymouth.  Do you know where the marriage took place or where either Thomas or Anne was born, and approximately when?

Hello Jill - thank you so much for responding to my email.
Ann was born 1755 ? - died 9/12/1820 Plymouth. Her Husband Thomas Lockyer was Christened 25/12//1756 at Uffculme, Devon - he died 9/8/1806. Ann never remarried - they lived together in Wembury House, Wembury. Thomas built the house...which is still standing.
Thomas died due to a Horse accident.
Major Edmund Lockyer & Capt Nicholas Lockyer RN were 2 of their children. Unfortunately that is all the information that our Family has regarding Ann.
Apparently the Lockyers originated in Somerset we believe, no idea how far back. We have a Lockyer Family Tree back to 1755.
Thanks & Regards Pam

Hi Pam,

Sorry, I haven't found anything positive for you.  There was an Ann GROZE baptised 16 January 1754 at Winterbourne-St. Martin, Dorset, father named George and there seem to have been quite a lot of GROSE people in Cornwall, but no Ann which looks likely.  A Thomas Lockyer was fathering children in Cranborne, Dorset in the 1750's

I did find two Lockyer marriages in Uffculme [Pallot's Marriage Index] - Agnes Lockyer married Francis Cotterel in 1802 and Henry Lockyer married Elizabeth Glass in the same year. Possibly related to Thomas?

Sorry I couldn't be more help but good luck in your search.

Many thanks Jill - Ann is definitely an elusive lady...I wish I could find Lockyers in the UK there has to be someone out there with info on Ann. Perhaps Ann prefers to remain hidden!

Dear Richardsoz,
I have just joined rootschat because I saw your question about Ann Grose. I was fascinated because she is also my GGG grandmother! We have a photograph of her taken from a painting that someone else in the family owns. I don't yet have more info about her yet...but will see if anyone else does in due course.

Hi Bernadette-many thanks making contact. I have photograph of Ann & Thomas (Painting) very handsome couple. The only info I could find was Ann's Father was mentioned as a Plymouth Gentleman & his daughter Ann married Thomas Lockyer a Sailmaker of Plymouth. There are a lot of Grose's from Cornwell, which Lockyer Family Line are you descended from?  :)

Hello again,
Thank you for writing. I managed to track down the Lockyer family tree (compiled by a cousin) and found I was in error – I had skipped a generation! so I am in fact the g g g g grandaughter of Ann Grose, descended from their eldest son, Thomas (m. Jane Rivers), then through their 2nd son Nicholas Lockyer (m. Eliza Jackson), and then their youngest daughter, Annie Francis Lockyer (my great grandmother) who married Dr Edward Prynne. I wonder which line you are descended from?
I would also like to find out more about Eliza Jackson & Jane Rivers and their respective families. Do you have any further leads on them, perhaps?
My cousin also has reproduced the family crest and motto, 'Sedule et secunde'.
Best wishes,
Bernadette

Hi Bernadette - re the Lockyer women you mentioned - I am aware of their names only....My lineage is from Major Edmund Lockyer's 2nd Wife, Sarah née Morris & their Daughter Emily Catherine Jersey Lockyer. The Major moved from Ceylon to Australia with Sarah & their children & remained till their Deaths.
This website is mainly for descendants of Thomas & Ann (Grose) Lockyer children.
