William ALLAN (born circa 1804)
« on: Monday 03 January 11 12:57 GMT (UK) »
Greetings,

This is my first post on this forum so I apologise in advance if I goof anything up.

I am looking for information about my 3rd great-grandfather William Allan. In particular any birth/christening information, and the names of his parents or any of his siblings.

This is my first time researching Scottish ancestry, and I am not really sure of where to start.

William was born c 1804, and emigrated to Tasmania in 1833 on the Forth, to work for the Van Diemens Land Company. The Ships Manifest states that he was a millright in Stonehaven, Kincardineshire.

In Australia he married Elizabeth Turner in 1836, had 7 children (that I know of so far), and died of liver problems in 1857.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

Cheers
Karen

William left Scotland before the 1841 census, so you would need to look at the Old Parish Registers on Scotlands People website (pay to view) for his birth/baptism. Stonehaven is in the county of Kincardine and is divided into Fetteresso and Dunnottar parishes. A preliminary search shows one result in Fetteresso. The IGI shows a William Allan born 1805 to James Allan in Fetteresso.

Do you know his parents' names from his marriage certificate? Could that be him?

Scotlands People also has free indexes to wills and inventories that can be downloaded for a fee. There is an inventory for a James Allan, Millwright, who died 1840. There might possibly be a connection.

Greetings Isabel,

Thank you for your reply.

Sadly the marriage certificates in Tasmania in 1836, did not record the names of the parents which has made tracing William that little more challenging.

And thank you for the information on where I can look next. It gives me a good place to start.

Cheers,
Karen
