Ancestor born on Bay of Biscay
« on: Tuesday 04 January 11 19:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I have an ancestor living in Wolverton, Warwickshire, who is started as born on the Bay of Biscay on various census returns. His name is William Harrison born about 1798, he married Charlottte Hatton in Brailes in 1822. The only thing I can think of is that he may have been born on a ship - did woman go on ships in the Napeleonic wars? Is there any way I can trace his birth?

Interestingly I also have a 3rd Great GrandAunt, Mary Ann(e) Horton born on 14th July 1876 in the Bay of Biscay, Vizcaya, Pais Vasco, Spain and then Baptised in London a year later.  I can find no reason as to why she was born there?!  Her Father was George and Mother Mary.  I can find her later on census but can find no record of her brother Thomas (my Third Great Grandfather)  before or after 1829 when he was married.  Any hints greatly received.  Thank you.

Should that be 1786?

Yes sorry it is 1786!  I have found a baptism in London over a year later but there is no occupation for Father recorded.  Thanks for your replies.  Much appreciated.

It appears that she may actually have been born in Gibraltar in 1786 as I've just found her on the 1861 census and it states, place of birth as Gibraltar, British subject.  It looks like the army may have been on Gibraltar during that time?
