Hi Emmy,
I have just checked the 1861 census for Amelia Alice Patternden and William Samuel Linfield. Here's what I found -
First... Amelia Alice Pattenden
1861 census, Worth, to the east of the London to Brighton road
RG9/580 : folio 8 : page 7
Cottage Land,
Edward Pattenden, head, m, 74, farmer of 11 acres, b. East Grinstead
Lucy, wife, m, 68, b. Worth
(given the name of Amelia's father , these could be her grandparents)
West of the Cuckfield to London road
RG9/580 : folio 26 : pages 12-13
Copthouse Cottage
Edward Pattenden, head, m, 39, ag labourer, b. Worth
Elizabeth, wife, m, 26, b. Worth
Elizabeth S, dau, 8, scholar, b. Worth
Amelia A, dau, 6, scholar, b. Worth
Edward, son, 6, scholar, b. Worth
James, son, 1, b. Worth
I couldn't find any other Pattendens in Worth.
Next... William Samuel Lindfield
1861 census, Chailey
RG9/585 : folio 19 : pages 6 and 7
New House
William Lindfield, head, m, 74, retired farmer, b. Keymer
Eliza, wife, 46 (yes, I looked twice at her age but it is quite clear!) b. Clayton
Catherine, dau, unm, 30, b. Chailey
William H, grandson, 4, b. Chailey
(the entry for William is definitely H, but this might be an enumerators error?)
and living next door at what looks like Jackey Hoade? appear to be William's parents -
William Lindfield, head, m, 44, ag labourer & huckster, b. Clayton
Matilda, wife, m, 37, b. Laughton
Ellen, dau, unm, 18, b. Chaliey
Esther, dau, unm, 14, b. Chailey
Samuel, son, 11
two house further on,
Broddstone
Peter Lindfield, head, m, 58, ag labourer, b. Keymer
Martha, wife, m, 49, b. Clayton
David, son, unm, 19, ag labourer, b. Cuckfield
Charity, dau unm, 17, general servant, b. Clayton
Daniel, son, 9, carters boy, b. Chailey
Isaac, son, 5, b. Chailey
I couldn't find any other Lindfields in Chailey.
I hope there's something there for you to go on!
Chris
