Ochil Hills Sanitarium
« on: Wednesday 05 January 11 07:39 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find military records for James Mercer McCall, born 1895 in Coldingham and who died in the Orchil Hills Sanitarium, Opwell, Kinross on 31 Oct 1923 at the age of 28.

He was married to Louisa Mickelwright and may have been a POW during the first world war and may have served with a Wiltshire regiment, though living in Scotland.

Would anyone know how I can get any records from this Sanitarium, or has it closed down?

Anyone researching this family perhaps?  I have an army photo of his regiment, but it is too unclear to see any badges.

My grandfather William Gow contracted TB in the Navy during WW2 and also died here in 1953.
It was though the fresh air would help TB sufferers.

Here it is on the map:

But reading recent posts on the internet it now appears to have been demolished recently.

Some limited info & photos on the web - also try Ochil Hills Hospital -  but try the Perth and Kinross Council Library for more info.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your info Alan and sorry to reply so late.  I am Down-Under and caught up in all the recent floods.

I'll try the website you suggested and go from there.  Am hoping someday to find the regiment my great uncle was in.

Hi there,
The Ochil Hills Sanatorium was a specialist TB hospital. An uncle of mine was medical superintendent there for several years, mainly in the '60s and lived on site. It was a wonderful, happy place and I have many happy memories of visiting when I was a child.
It has now been demolished to make way for housing and it is difficult to find any records.
If you'd like some old photos of the building taken mainly during the war when my mother was also nursing there, I would be happy to send them.

Hi Christine,
I have just got back onto this post and noticed you have a photo of the Ochil Hill Sanitarium where my great uncle died in 1928 after contracting TB after WW1.

I would love to have a copy if you can manage to post one.

Many thanks for your help
Lorand.
