Margate old roads - Kidman's Row
« on: Wednesday 05 January 11 22:03 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find the current whereabouts of an address in Margate which I know is no longer there.

On the 1901 census my ancestors appear as living at 2 Kidman's Row. I assume it was somewhere near St John's Church, but any help narrowing it down further would be greatly appreciated please.

Hi looking Back through old maps etc and census entries . I should think it was a row of 8 really old cottages somewhere along St Johns Street between the corner of Churchfields Rd and Charlotte street in the Vicinity of Churchfield school. Afraid thats not a lot of help ,If you dont get an accurate result from our chatters ,your best bet is to contact Margate Library they are sure to hold the 1895 or 1905 OS map and will do a look up for you.

Hi Localhistory,

Just had a look on google maps and Kidman's Row was just off Mill Lane currently buried under the car park which serves the high street in Margate.

Kidman's Row was quite a rowdy part of Margate toern down 1949. The Fusco's (Organ grinders!) took up nearly all the houses and a John Fusco is living at number 2 in 1899 and 1900, later moving to number 3 by the 1901 Census.
His brother Nicholas lives at number 5.

The Row was named after a local lady, Sarah Kidman who bequeathed much money to Margate when she died in 1839.

I put two maps here to show you the location previously and currently.
St John's Place and Street are in the same place today so you can get your bearings.

Just to confirm previous postings, Kidman’s Row can be seen on two maps included on the http://www.margatelocalhistory.co.uk web site. No 2 Kidman’s Row was occupied by a Samuel Gibbs in 1883 (see directory for 1883 on the site). The 10 feet to the mile Ordnance Survey Map of 1873   shows Kidman’s Row as a row of houses in a courtyard that could be reached from either St John’s Street or Church Square. It is also shown in the Edmunds Map of 1821.
