Philadelphia arrivals - JENKINS
« on: Saturday 08 January 11 14:41 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I wonder if someone could look up the passenger lists for emigrants to Philadelphia for David Walter Jenkins around 1888?

Passenger lists are new to me so I am floundering a bit and would appreciate any help/guidance.

Info on David Walter Jenkins is that he was born around 1852, Swansea; it appears he deserted his wife and emigrated.

I have found him on a Philadelphia census in 1900 which is where I got the date of emigration -1888.

Thanks in the hope that someone can help.

I haven't found anything for his immigration, but it looks like the 1910 Census also says he immigrated in 1888:  http://www.rootschat.com/links/0b55/

Also, maybe this is his death record?  http://www.rootschat.com/links/0b56/

Many thanks for your replies Shellyesq and Erato :)

Yes I agree, the 1910 Census does look like him, does it say he was a bookeeper as this is what the1900 Census said and his marriage certificate said he was an accountant?

His death details I did not know so that is a great find, many thanks.

As for his arrival in Boston, that is very interesting and is a possibility because his father was a coal merchant so there was coal in his family. However, his wife had a baby in 3rd qtr 1889 so this makes the 1888 departure/arrival more feasable.  I am hoping that as we was in two Philladelphia censuses then that was his port of entry so really need access to these.  :-\

Thinking more on the Boston arrival, the child born after his departure could I suppose have been fathered by another but his wife did not marry anyone else and died in 1898. But the 'miner' bit does not really sit well -  unless of course he always wanted to be a miner and was made to train as a bookeeper/accountant! After sitting at a desk with figures for many years myself, I could see there might be an attraction :o ;D

I don’t see any other candidates named David or Walter Jenk*s, born 1852 +/- 2,  entering an East Coast port - NY, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Boston or Canada.

Any other possible name variants?  Could he have been born much earlier or later?

Thanks for looking Erato;

I am pretty sure his name is correct; I have his birth certificate on order and originally worked out his dob from his marriage certificate.

So the arrival in Boston is looking better by the minute!

Possibly.

BUT, there is a David Jenkins, b. 1852 in Wales, miner, immigrated 1887, in the 1900 census in Colorado.  This could be the guy who arrived at Boston.

Ah... yes that means it is most unlikely.  :-\   But many thanks for checking as at the moment I do not have access to the American censuses.

I must admit that I had shelved my search for my ggrandfather  a few years ago because I hit a dead end but more recently, I thought there was a website specifically for ships manifests. However there seems to be nothing except going to Anc*****.com    or does anyone else know of any other sites?
