Look for power managent in control panel. Some laptops have power off to save the battery.

This person tried some things and although they didn't work for them, they may for you.

Have a look in your Toshiba file in the Start Menu. You may find the ODD utility.

Hi

Seems to be a historic problem with the Tosh Portege range

Thanks all for replies. I've tried device manager etc, rebooting, checked power plans  and so on.  No good results at all.

This laptop is one week old today...

This drive has been working thru the week as I have installed software without trouble.  Then today- this.

Does all this suggest it is a hardware problem and Toshiba need to fix it?

Jamjar, I can't see any Toshiba file in the start menu.

Hi

Review the sequence in which you installed software.
Then reverse the sequence and uninstall one by one, rebooting between uninstalls and try the drive each time.

If you get to the end and still not working then take it back to the shop.

Or

Trying calling whoever you bought it from

And/Or

Call Toshiba

And/Or

Return it to whoever you bought it from quoting 1) "unfit for purpose" and 2) the two forums that Jamjar and I have listed.
Stand your ground...............

Thanks Ray for the guidance-sad as it all is.

part of the reason I bought it is to have it to take away later this  week ::)

remembering the sequence of installation is probably hopeless- printer, camera,FH software etc....

I found the Toshiba Diagnostic Tool and ran that..   It "skipped"the CD/DVD drive[presumably couldn't find it]  and the HDD was tested and "failed"

Is all this telling me that the hardware is faulty?

I am capable of standing my ground but I could do without this right now.

Hi

I suppose that logically it would be just the last one installed
(else you could not install it if the drive did not work)
although, if you've installed more than one as the last install task ............

Is anything that you installed an obvious candidate?
NERO? ROXIOCREATOR? dvd/cd authoring s/w?
Anti-virus? "Firewall"?

Ray, none of those you mention have been installed by me on this laptop.  So no bvious villan

It's theCanon  printer that was the first install I think, then the Pansonic Lumix camera software, then FTM.

When I put into the CD/DVD drive the MS Office 2007 it didn't work but that may have been caused by the preceeding install which I think was FTM.
