George Sharpe
« on: Thursday 06 January 11 19:50 GMT (UK) »
I am new to this site please pardon my blunders. I am seeking info for my dad. The family info I have is: the location is St. Hiller, Jersey, Channel Islands.   My great grandfather paternal name is Frederick Sharpe DOB 24 March 1910 married Hilda Gladys Sbire DOB 23 April 1888. She died 6 April 1918 in Fairmile house Dorset. Her father is James Sbire, her mother is Louise Alice Larbalestier. Hilda and Fredrick  had 4 children George, Gladys , Less Sharpe who became wards of the Dr. Bernardo organization, the fourth child was  a half brother and was removed when he was a few months old his name at birth was Bernard or Bertram this is the last information we have. If anyone has information relating to the Sharpe side of the family that might be helpful my dad would sure love it. Many thanks Laurie

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

I think your date of birth for Frederick should be a date of marriage

The free 1911 index has a Frederick Sharpe living in Croydon Surrey but it cross matches to an entry for a "Mrs Gladys May Sharpe" b 1890

If you search the index for Gladys May Sharpe b 1890 living in Croydon and with a birthplace of "Channel Islands" - it matches

It does not match to a birthplace of any of the following - Jersey/St Helier/St Saviour

There is also a 3mth old Gladys May Sharpe in the household

If you have a copy of the 1910 marriage cert - what was the name and occupation of Frederick's father

Hi Carol, in searching I have found S'Bire spelled so many ways it is crazy :) I believe Fredrick Sharpe's father was a Master Mariner, however I cannot find any other information. Fredrick Sharpe is the last Sharpe I can find and it is only through his wife Hilda Glady.  I signed up for the 14 day trial through ancestry.com but it doesn't seem to have any information, in fact I found more information on-line on my own for free. :(

By the way what is 2a 571 ?

If you look at the 1911 census page, you will see where Frederick was born which should help to narrow down choices on earlier censuses.  If that doesn't work, then I'm afraid that you'll have to buy the marriage cert which will give father's name and profession.

2A is the volume number and 571 is the page number - these are needed if you were ordering a copy of the 1910 marriage cert

If you have a look at the entry on freebmd - it will show you the full reference  www.freebmd.org.uk

It's my fault - I forgot you were new and "lapsed" into just putting the type of info we use for more experienced researchers -  sorry about that

To trace Frederick backwards - we need to know both his birthplace and his fathers name

If you do not already have a copy of the 1910 marriage cert - you would need to buy one to get that info
