Mary HURST

Hi all,
Do hope someone can help me, I'm looking for information about my g-g-g-grandmother, Mary Hurst, she was from Oldham, Lancashire UK, born approximately 1780 went to Tasmania on the 'Mellish' in 1830 with six of her children, her eldest son, James was convicted, for burglary, along with his father, Richard at Lancaster Court in 1827, they were both sentenced to death, which was commuted to transportation to Tasmania for life, they arrived in the colonies on the convict ship 'Woodford' in 1828.   Richard was eventually granted permission to have Mary and the children join him in Tasmania.  I don't know anything else about Mary, not her maiden name, I know that both she and Richard lived until their 90s, from some records I have been able to get they were given permission to marry in 1928 before Richard left UK.

A Mary Hurst arrived on the ship 'Guilford' in 1830 with 4 kids.

Might be your Mary and Richard in the 1842 census.. 7 in the household.

Hi Thelly,

Unfortunately none of the early Tas records would give you Mary's maiden surname.  I know of convicts in Newgate prison in London being taken across the road to St Sepulchre's to marry, so perhaps working on the same theory you might check the church records around the area of Lancaster prison.  Perhaps if you post a query on the Lancashire board someone who knows the area might be able to look for a marriage for you.  I don't see anything obvious on FamilySearch.

There's a Mary Ann Hurst (nee Stevenson) buried at Wesleyan Burial Ground , Hill Street, Hobart, died 1849 at 60 yrs old.

I did find out about the squabble through Trove.. just varied search parameters.

Are your certain Mary died at 90? In the 1881 court case it states "by her will" in 1851 and later "died many years since" . Do you have a birth year?

The grave could be worth checking on, as many a time age/dates/names have been wrongly transcribed.

You have to wonder in what context  her father's name is entered on the death reg. - very unusual for that time period.

Thelly, I can't see a death reg. for a 90 year old Mary HURST - what year was it?

Hi,

From the Hobart Town Gazette 19th December 1861 under CITY OF HOBART AND THE SUBURBS THEREOF
on page 1998 for Wellington Street a Mary Hurst was the owner and occupier of a house and shop with an annual value of 16 pounds.

There was a convict Mary Anne Hurst off the Dianna who got her Certificate of Freedom in December 1840.
