ROWSE, ROUSE, ROWS

  Seeking anyone connected with the ROWSE family of Brixham. They were fishing folk, and branched out to Hull, Ramsgate and Tenby.  Connected to many other BRIXHAM families including COBLEY, NOWELL, SPARKES, DREW, JACKMAN, CROCKER, WEBBER, COLE, BRINHAM and JOB.  I have been working alone for many years and would dearly like to hear from someone else in the family.

Not an answer to the post (sorry!) because I've never spent much time in Brixham, but a comment, not without genealogical interest,  on the name Rowse. Probably the most famous holder of that name was the historian A. L. Rowse, who was very proud of coming from Cornwall (not Brixham). I met him twice, about 20 years apart, and both times he asked the same question on hearing my name: "Are you Cornish?" There are of course people called Cornish in Cornwall, especially in the region close to Plymouth, but that's mainly a consequence of back-migration from Devon, descendants of Cornish people who settled in Devon in the 15th century. I was quite surprised that an expert on Elizabethan England would think that Cornish was a Cornish name, any more than Devenish is a Devon name (it's found, not surprisingly, mostly in Somerset).

I did write to the famous A L Rowse, many years ago, enquiring if there might be any connection, and received a very terse refute, suggesting I read "a Cornish childhood", scrawled across the top of my letter. Which was better than no reply of course.

I remain convinced it is highly likely the Cornish and Devon Rowses were originally connected, but proving it is a different matter!!

I have some Rowses marrying into my Scoble family in Devon, although these are all in Brixton (a small village a few miles from Plymouth), not Brixham. If this connection is relevant to anyone, I’ve got a few photos of gravestones from Brixton which I’d be happy to email.
