Roland Pretty Hill
« on: Wednesday 12 January 11 12:12 GMT (UK) »
Roland (or Rowland) my Great Uncle was a cricket cartoon artist b1866 and died 1949. He was born in Astwood Bank/Feckenham, Worcestershire but spent much of his life in London. I know the 1901 census has him down at an address in Fulham age 35 and single. I am trying to trace if he has any descendants but do not know if he ever married. I do not have access to the detail of the 1911 census, can anyone help with where he lived, who he was with and if he is recorded as married etc.? or indeed any other information..

Sorry but 1911 census requests are not allowed - please see here:

The index is free to search and there are lots of suggestions on this thread:

In addition to restrictions regarding 1911 census, Rootschat isn't a forum for tracing living people so we can only offer general advice on finding descendants of Roland Hill's. Have a look at the links for tracing living people-

Here's a bit about his death- "HILL, MR. ROLAND PRETTY, the cartoonist known as Rip, died in London on December 29, aged 83. He was the first line artist to concentrate on cricket and his drawings of players appeared in the London Evening News and many magazines."

Do you have the death certificate? informant might be wife or child. Possibly registers in Oct./Dec.1949 or Jan./Mar.1950 since he died at the end of December.

looking for Roland Hill marriage
« Reply #3 on: Monday 17 January 11 20:36 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace the name of my Great uncles wife and when/where he got married. His name is Roland (or Rowland) Pretty Hill born Feckenham, worcestershire in 1866. In the 1901 census he is living in Fulham and is single. I know he married and subsequently had children but my searches have so far come to nothing. His parents were Alfred Hill and Ellen (Hiam).
Can anyone help?

No point in starting a new topic looking for information previously asked for so I've merged your new post with the existing thread.

Have you already checked www.freebmd.org and found nothing for a marriage and possible children? or are there too many choices there? if all elsse fails a newspaper obituary (listing relatives) or death certificate (if a relative was the informant) might be needed.

Tried freebmd, far too many Roland Hills and as I am not sure where he married, too difficult to pin down. I have a couple of obituaries but unfortunately all they state is that he left a wife and children, no names ....

This genealogy lark can be challenging can't it!!

Perhaps the next step should be finding him (hopefully married and possibly with children) in 1911 census.

I thought that, but I cannot find him on that census. I know he did travel abroad at times and it may be that he was not in the c.ountry at the time of the census I suspect finding details of his marriage, (assuming he got married in this country) to be the simplest way of finding this information out.

I think your best bet to find out if he was married would be the death cert,as Aghadowey suggested yesterday.

Roland P Hill died age 83 in Dec 1/4 of 1949 registered in Hendon.
