You could be right about Emily and John since their birth were clovelly and the others woolfardisworthy (tenuous i know but possible). I shall investigate further.

Also you have Beers!!! Could this be my first "meeting" on rootschat?!?   ;D

Have changed my mind about Emily from a previous marriage - this is 1871 census - they married in Q2 1851, so Emily was her's.

Have also found them in 1861:
William Beer     32    born Clovelly, Devon  Agricultural Labourer
Susan Beer    30    born Clovelly, Devon
Mary Ann Beer    10    born Clovelly, Devon
Emily Beer     8    born Clovelly, Devon
Francis Beer     6    born Clovelly, Devon
William Beer    4    born Clovelly, Devon
Thomas Beer     2    born Clovelly, Devon
John Beer    4M    born Clovelly, Devon
Francis Brend   20    born Clovelly, Devon  LODGER  (a relation of Susan's maybe??)

RG9/1505/F?

Being VERY VERY Tenuous again, She has a son named Thomas - possibly after a brother who had died recently - so could be Thomas died pre 1859 - I know the words "straws" and "clutching at" come to mind  ;)
