Wedding news - Old Newport newspapers 1879

Hi. I may be clutching at straws but my GG Grandfather Alfred Winfield married Priscilla Comley 20 Aug 1879 and I have a copy of the marriage cerificate but my research into Alfreds earlier family ends with him.

Many pointers show that he may have been illegitimate, but I am really struggling to get his mothers name

Would there be any inserts in local papers of the time with details of the marriage "Alfred son of etc"

His address is shown as 29 Victoria Crescent Newport and he is a sailor

They were married at the Register Office "in the district of Newport"

From other census it seems he originally came from Windsor, Berkshire but I cant find any birth details. Really stuck and any help appreciated!

He states his age as 26 on the marraige certificate so 1853 from that document. However the 1881 census has him age 30 so that could be 1851

Based on the marriage certificate Im happier with 1853

FreeBMD has 3 Alfred Winfields born between 1850 and 1853, one of which was born in Wallingford which apparently spans Oxfordshire and Berkshire. The reference is Mar quarter 1851 Wallingford 6 296

Thanks Greygirl but the Wallingford one has parents Eliza and Silas and so their Alfred isnt the one Im after

Is there a fathers name on the wedding certificate? Any clues with witness names?

Hi Steve, yes fathers named is David (deceased) and occupation "Gentleman" so Im assuming this could be made up
And the witnesses were Albert Comley and Catherine Morgan (both from the Newport area)

Ive searched fruitlessly for a David Winfield through the Ancestry sites so taking in census records etc ...

Any help appreciated!
