McDermott - Dundalk?
« on: Monday 24 January 11 17:55 GMT (UK) »
This one is the bare minimum of data to work on.  Patrick McDermott is supposed to have been born in Dundalk in about 1850.  His father's name was Hugh.  There is nothing to say that Hugh came from Dundalk, and there is some vague evidence that he was related to a McDermott line that traces back to Monaghan - but did not go near Dundalk.  There is nothing for/against the notion that Patrick was born elsewhere, and raised in Dundalk.
So, the question is:
Does anyone know of other McDermotts born in Dundalk (or elsewhere, for that matter) in the period 1840-1870, with a father named Hugh?
Geoff

Have you checked civil registration index for any McDermott births, deaths and marriages in Dundalk before 1870?
If you search for 'McDermott' with 'louth' as key word you can check Wills index (and sometimes actual wills) from PRONI- quite a few in Dundalk area:

Hi Geoff—I don't know about Patrick, but Hugh McDermott and his wife Mary (née Robinson) baptised a number of their children in Dundalk around that time: Mary Anne (1844), Hugh (1846), Bernard (1851), Teresa (1854), Alice & Bridget (1856), and Jane (1859).

There's a curious gap there 1846–'51, so there's a chance Patrick might've been born in that time and baptised elsewhere (or there could be a gap in the register—I haven't checked for that).

Ha ha, yes, I noticed that—but these discussions are of interest to other people too (like me!), so I thought I'd add more information for anyone else who might stumble across this thread in their searches.  :)

Thanks for your consideration—but no worries, I didn't have any illusions about a response from the OP anytime soon (or ever)!
