Alfred Adlem b. 1858 Militia Stores, Barnet, either Hertfordshire or Middlesex, ENG (depending on where the boundary was at the time) married Sophia Jane Bates b. 1856 Stoke Newington, Islington, Middlesex, ENG.
They married in Woollahra, NSW in 1884, after both living in the same street in Islington in 1871.
Alfred travelled to Melbourne arr. Oct 1882 on board the
Austral, which happened to sink in Sydney Harbour a fortnight later.
EDIT Alfred sailed with the vessel and went onto Sydney.
Sophia travelled at sometime between 1881 and 1884. (
Perhaps on the
Orient arriving may 1884 - Fiche 435, Page 010 unassisted passage to Melbourne)
They had 2 children, William Brooke who died at 6 months and Gwendoline Una Froude b. 31 Dec 1899 in Bondi, NSW.
Gwendoline graduated from Teachers' College with a Bachelor of Science in 1920 and went on to become a high school teacher. As far as I can tell, she didn't marry. She died in 1986.
The things I'm interested in:1. If someone has access to the electoral rolls, could they tell me their movements and also their occupations.
I've found lots of ads in Trove for an Alfred Adlem in the clothing industry advertising in Queensland. His probate notice calls him a traveller, Manufacturer's Agent, so I'm wondering if this is the same fellow.
Again in Trove, I found an A. Adlem representing WW Campbell & Co at a funeral. They were a furniture manufacturer, wholesaler and retailer.
2. Does anyone know anything about Gwendoline as she sounds a thoroughly modern lady for her time?
3. Did Sophia arrive on the
Orient - if someone has access to the manifest, or is going to the State Library (is that where the records are held?), it's Fiche 435 Page 010, I'd be eternally grateful.
Thanks,
Alison
