Grave look up please - Hull Western Cemetery (COMPLETED)
« on: Tuesday 25 January 11 10:16 GMT (UK) »
If anyone is nearby, could they have a look for a grave for me in Hull Western Cemetery?

I'm told by the bereavement service at Hull City Council that the grave is in the 'old grounds' which is the Chanterlands Avenue area.

The grave is of Thomas Matson, died 08/02/1864 aged 40 (Buried 18/02/1864)

The grave number is 1833, Compartment 21 (not sure how helpful this might be!).

The Hull City Council's burial number for their records was 1358.

I expect the grave may be in poor condition but I would love to see a picture of it if anyone can find it.  I currently live in Manchester but hope to travel across soon.

Many thanks to anyone looking.

Hi Essenchill

Unfortunatley I can't look myself because I'm in Hampshire :)

However, from what I remember from when I was last there in 2010 the grave should be right up against houses on the far extremity of the access road. In short, from Spring Bank go along Chanterlands Ave and take the RIGHT turn across the dual carriageway into the cemetery. The road very gently sweeps left and then runs parallel to the houses on your left. Follow this to the very end, it has a small turning circle. The grave should then be in about you 10 O'clock but you will have to look at the gravestones for a compartment and grave number. They are mostly on the bottom of the stone in small letters/numbers.

Without wanting to disappoint, the council tidied the area up a few years ago and removed the majority of the stones so you would be lucky if the one you want is still there. I know of at least 5 graves in there that had stones but only one remains :'(

Cheers

Hi Ian,

Many thanks for the info and the detailed directions.

I don't have much hope of the stone being there to be honest, none of my family have been aware of it in order to campaign for it's safety nor to keep it in general good condition!  But I hope to head there at some point this year and have a good look so I will know for sure!

Hi Carol,

My family appear to have stuck to traditional names and by the tradition of naming their children after their parents and themselves which makes for a complicated family history on one hand but on a great feeling of family closeness and togetherness!  From your list, the only names which I don't have any current reference to are Jennie and Kenneth Coverdale.  I would be very interested in seeing the details for the others as listed, thank you.

Thanks Carol.  I know I'm not alone in having the same names repeated throughout many generations.  It is the most confusing when a child has died and another is given the same family forename years later.  As much as it makes research tricky, it makes a fascinating picture of life at the time.  Once more, many thanks for your information.
