How do I find more info??
« on: Saturday 16 April 05 20:19 BST (UK) »
I have my Great grandfather on 1901 census.  His occupation shows as ''retired colour sergeant''.

How can I find out more info?  For example, where would he have been based?

In 1901 he was living in Derby - there was an army barracks at Normanton at that time.

He was born in Paddington, London in 1860

Any help greatly appreciated

Thanks

Have you established the identity of the regiment he served with?.
Also, where was he and what was his occupation in the 1881 census?.
I think they would be good starting points.
The information given is very scant. If you were to establish the regiment he served with the you could follow up the regimental history.
Best of luck. :)

Hi,

Unfortunately I know very little about him, as he died before my mother was born.

James Edward Birch was born 1860 in the Strand District of London.  He was a twin.  His brother, I beleive, died shrotly after birth.

She believes (and this is only hearsay) that he was in the Grenadiers - sherwood Forester's regiment.

I have not yet found him on the 1891 census.  Neither do I have a record of his marriage.

I have him (I think) in 1881 aged 22 - details below.

"95th Regiment South Camp Aldershot"
Census Place    Aldershot, Hampshire, England

        Public Records Office Reference   RG11
        Piece / Folio   0784 / 61
        Page Number   29

Thanks again for your reply.

You seem to have a Derbyshire connection in the family.By coincidence the 95th Regiment was the Derbyshire Regiment, which became the Sherwood Foresters. Have a look at the following site if you are not already aware of it.It may be of use to your research.
