Hoxne Deaths Poss Worlingworth/Wilby
« on: Thursday 27 January 11 19:14 GMT (UK) »
Bit of an ask but worth a go.  After recently viewing the 1911 census for my great great grandparents Charles & Elvina Chapman, it says they had a 5th child that didn't survive.  I've managed to narrow the said child down to 5 possible matches on freebmd:

Charles Spurgeon Chapman Died Dec 1892 Hoxne aged 0
Bertha Chapman Died June 1897 Hoxne aged 0
Male Chapman Died March 1900 Hoxne aged 0
George Frederick Chapman Died Dec 1900 Hoxne aged 2
Ada Chapman Died Sep 1901 Hoxne aged 0

Their 4 other children were born in Athelington and Worlingworth and they married in Wilby.  The vicar for Athelington kindly had a look in the registers for me but there were no Chapmans there.  Just wondering if anyone has access to the Worlingworth, Wilby or any other of the parishes listed in the Hoxne district and would like to have a little search for any of the above please?

It would be very appreciated  :)

Joanne,

Not much help here but from the Suffolk Burial Index (ex SFHS) I have managed to find
the following;
26-4-1897 Bertha Chapman, 6w, Fressingfield St..Peter & St.Paul.

I did look for others but couldn't see them.

Maybe a wild card, but as the first child on the list is named Charles Spurgeon Chapman it may be worth looking in the non conformist records  particularly Baptist. Very strong area for all baptists.
Charles Spurgeon was a great baptist preacher who died in 1892!

Hi Joanne,
Just looked at Worlingworth PR burials fiche for the period you mention and no sign of any Chapmans.
The last entry was dated 8 Sept 1900 so couldn't check your 1901 possibility.

Also have two other Hoxne dist PRs - Tannington and Bedfield and the Tannington one covers the whole period you mention but no Chapmans. The Bedfield last entry was 19 July 1901 but no Chapmans to then.

Hi Joanne,

Thirty plus years ago I knew a Chapman family who lived in Athelington and attended Horham Baptist Chapel.
This possibly could tie in with Charles Spurgeon Chapman - named after the "Prince of Preachers" - Charles Haddon Spurgeon. It might be worth contacting the chapel to see if they have burial records. They, of course, would not have christening records as Grace (formerly Strict) Baptists do not practice infant baptism.

The chapel does not appear to have a minister at the moment or a website, but perhaps a letter to the church secretary may help-
