PATRICK REDDINGTON b 1846
« on: Sunday 06 June 04 13:24 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me find Patrick REDDINGTON  born 1846

He married Ellen (Smith?) - from Kilkenny - and they moved to Garston, Liverpool.  They had 5 children - all born in Garston -

Margaret b1871
Mary Ellen b.1875
Joseph Patrick b.1878 d.1891
Sarah Ann b.1880 d.1928 (my g.grandmother)
Roseta b.1884

Patrick is not listed in 1901 census but Ellen is - still in Garston.

Thanks in advance, Sheelagh

Thanks Chris

Yes that's them.  Any idea how I find out about Patrick's birth?  Do you know if his marriage certificate would give exact details?

Thanks again,  Sheelagh

Hi there

Civil registration based upon that in England was introduced to Ireland in 1845 when non catholic marriages were required to be registered; but Complete registration did not begin until Jan 1st 1864.

Registers of births, marriages and deaths before 31 December 1921 for the whole of Ireland, and after that date for the Republic of Ireland only are held at the General Registry Office in Dublin.

So it is doubtful if you will be able to find a birth certificate for Patrick.

Personally, I have never seen an Irish Marriage certificate, but if it was based upon the english system then it contains:
When Married
Names & Surnames of each party
Ages
Condition - Batchelor, Spinster etc
Rank or Profession
Residence at time of marriage
Both Fathers names
Rank or profession of Fathers
Place of marriage, by whom, after banns or licence
Signature of Bride & Groom
Signature of Witnesses

Hi there

Yes, I am aware that at the moment my website has problems, its because I am in the process of updating to a bigger site that I can get more info on.

How can I help you with your Alice Haste in Hastings.

My archives are at your disposal

Hi Chris

Thanks for the offer on Alice Haste - I've got all the info I need at the moment but may take up your offer as I delve deeper!

I'm surprised how much people moved around in those days - I assumed they stayed close to their birthplace.  I found out Alice, who was born in Holbrook Suffolk, was a "nurse domestic" at a house in Hastings and wondered how she'd got the job - was there a family connection?  Also she married a man born in Pimlico - how did she meet him? Just wanted to get more background info on Hastings really and try to get more of a feel for what things were like at that time!

Hi,

Is there a reason to assume that Patrick Reddington and Ellen were married in Ireland? Where was the first child born?
There is a PAtrick Reddington marrying Ellen Smith on FreeBMD Mar 1866 in west Derby. Try this certificate for more info.
Do you have them on the 1881, 1871 or 1861 census? I found that sometimes the censs taker will write down more than just Ireland for a birth place.

I've seen Irish Marriage certificates and they are just as you say. Sometimes they say if the father's are deceased as they do in the UK.

Regards

Kate
