Can you help? Wrights ground south leith cemetery
« on: Tuesday 01 February 11 16:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi,can anyone tell me where Wrights ground cemetery is in south leith.
My ancestor was buried there in 1805, james Strachan (director of the customs, Leith)
His death certificate indicates that his grave is 8 paces north from the main gate.
I would like to visit and find his grave. Any information would be appreciated, thank you Dundee lass

Hi Dundee Lass

I think Wrights Ground is an area within South Leith Churchyard. There is also I believe in the same Churchyard, an area referred to as Mariners (Sailors) Ground, there may be more named areas within the grounds

There is this reference http://canmore.rcahms.gov.uk/en/site/254437/details/edinburgh+leith+kirkgate+south+leith+parish+church+churchyard/

I am wondering whether this is a modern reference to it www.edinburgh.gov.uk/directory_record/9888/kirkgate_cemetery_south_leith

Monica  :)

Added: The map and location showing for Kirkgate seems to match in terms of location with this www.panoramicearth.com/4943/Edinburgh/South_Leith_Parish_Church

Hi Dundee Lass

I have the MIs for South Leith.  Before you visit, you should know that there are no Strachans listed, indicating that the grave is unmarked.

Sorry.

hello, I have contacted the Church historian and Genealogist who has confirmed the burial place of my ancestor in the church records, there is no longer a gravestone as the Hospital (which was beside the church) was demolished in 1822 and the Hospital land went to increasing the size of the Churchyard called the "New Burying ground". Then between 1836 and 1848 the Churchyard was used as a builders yard for the restoration of the Church and there were many complaints about stones be moved elsewhere or removed completely.
But thank you very much for looking up the index for me, it was kind of you many thanks Dundee Lass

Hi Hibee, I see you have the MI's for Leith South and wondered if you'd be kind enough to look up a grave for me?
My ancestors surnames are Paton and Sclater. I know they themselves haven't a headstone, but they are buried next to Wilson the Caddie. Could you please look Wilson the Caddie up for me and tell me what his stone says so that I will know what to look for when I visit the cemetery later this year.

Kind regards
Russ Jones

Hi Russ

Sorry - I don't see any record for (John) Wilson the Caddie in South Leith.

There is a James Paton (d. 1787) and John Paton (d. 1950)

Thanks Hibee. Are the two Patons mentioned the only Patons? I'd be interested in the James Paton headstone if that's not too much trouble.

Regards
