Wilcox family
« on: Thursday 03 February 11 00:21 GMT (UK) »
I have traced my ancestors back to a man called John Wilcox who arrived in Newfoundland Canada in 1799. He received land under the William III act. He was born in 1775 apparently and all we know is that he was called a "Dorsetshire Man". He was a man of the sea and quickly became a ship owner, fisherman, trader, and sealer. Therefore I assume he was trained in this from an early age and that would mean he would have grown up around a sea port.
Anyone have any ideas?

Hi,

Welcome to Rootschat.  :)

Poole in Dorset had strong links with Newfoundland.

Poole Museum might be able to give you some information:
