Well finally got them in 1861 by using the birth place Portlemouth and nothing else. I don't know why FindMyPast wouldn't bring them up using their names and birthdates. But using the same method in 1881 doesn't bring up any of the others except james.

Joanna is still alive in 1901 and Edwin is still with her. He was written as Edward in 1891.

This one?  John married a relative of the same surname? Maybe one to keep to one side for now. The birthdate doesn;t match with her age in censuses but she may have knocked a couple of years off if she was older than John and just kept them off

I needed to know who Annie, the granddaughter with Joahanna in 1891, belonged to.
First I looked for a birth reg and the only one suitable was Beatrice Annie Dec 1/4 1877 Kingsbridge vol 5b page 223.
Eventually found her in 1881 with her parents William and Charlotte. William is Johanna's son born c1853.
