Who was 'Mrs GURR & child' (COMPLETE)
« on: Friday 04 February 11 04:52 GMT (UK) »
From: South Australian Register (Adelaide, SA : 1839-1900)
Shipping Intelligence
Wednesday 16 October 1850, Page 2 of 4

barque: HYDASPES
Dep. London, Gravesend 28 Jun 1850
Arr. Port Adelaide 15-Oct-1850.

Gurr, Mrs and child.

Unfortunately there are no passenger records for this ship for this voyage; the only reference is this report in the newspaper of the day.

I suppose Mrs Gurr's husband came to SA earlier and she has come out to meet him.

Does this good lady with her child fit with any researcher's family history?

Not related to the Family but there is a JOSEPH Gurr arriving in Sth Australia 11/11/1847 on the "ANTILLA" from London.

Maybe a possibility?

Trish :)

Hi Trish,

I understand Joseph married my g-g-great Aunt, Mary Roberts who traveled to SA aboard the Hydaspes as a companion to 'Mrs GURR & child'

I have logged all the GURRs that came to SA from the passenger lists in the Adelaide Library up to 1851 and can account for them all. There must be a stray one around some where that is eluding me

Thank you for replying.

Hi Dee,

There are about fifty three William Gurrs that came to SA between 1849 and 1879 though none are related to my g-g-great Aunt Mary Roberts so I don't have any details of them except their ship numbers.

How ever I do have some information on the following three.

1. William (c1821-     ), son of George and first wife Keturah (Young). He may have been one of the fifty three Williams that came to SA but I have no more details other than his Christening.

2. William (1855-1855), son of Joseph and Mary (Roberts). This little fellow was born in Adelaide and died aged just 9 moths.

3. William Valentine (1877-    ), son of Valentine and Mary (Rundle). and grandson of George and his second wife Ann (Allchin). He was born in Adelaide and married one Bessie Gibson. They had three children that I have been able to find.

If any of these three are of interest to you I will be pleased to send you what I have on them.

Regards

Hi again Dee,

Ooooops! I had a seniors moment earlier. I was looking at the wrong list when I gave the number of Gurrs arriving in SA.

I'll check when I next go to the Adelaide Library but I think there may have been only two families that came; one in 1850 (ship 50/6, Sultana) and one in 1858 (ship 58/6, General Hewett). Neither had a William though.

Hi bj,

The William Gurr I'm interested in died at Fullarton Estate, 4th February 1902 at age 81. So it is quite likely that the William Gurr c 1821 is the one in which I'm interested. This William Gurr lived in Saddleworth for many years.

I'd really appreciate any information you might happen to have. A friend and I have been involved in an amazing quest to find family for an old bible, and one of William's daughters is one of the 4 names in it.

I'll find the link to the thread about it if you are interested.

Hi Dee, Your William would seem to fit with mine.

I have no more information about him other than the Christening notes that I obtained from Familysearch.org: England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975

William Gurr baptised 30 Sep 1821 St Michael Lewes, Sussex parents George Gurr and Keturah

William is the only one of George's 7 children with first wife Keturah who's details I don't have. I will be very interested to have any information that you have. The daughter's name would be helpful. Do you know if he married here or in the UK?
I'll check the passenger lists again at the Library to see if I can find when he came to SA.

BJ, Thanks for that. I've copied those details as you might find it is removed by the Copyright Editor.

I can help you out with details of William Gurr's family.

Firstly, here's the link to the Old Bible Challenge.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,499352.0.html
Jean Ann GURR, William's daughter, gets her first mention on Page #2. Late in the thread there is a photograph of her.

William GURR was married to Kezia SAYERS, but I can't see the marriage in South Australia. Their first child that I can see was born in 1848 1846 (correction). All in all there are ten children registered in South Australia. If you don't have ready access to BDM, I'll let you have the details tomorrow. It'll take me some time to type them up.

I've attached a newspaper clipping which is rather hard to read unfortunately, but tells of some of his life.
