Looking for cummins/cummings
« on: Saturday 05 February 11 09:10 GMT (UK) »
William Cummins my g/g/father was born in Queens Co. 1804
Tried as an Irish Rebel in Port Laooise 1823
Arrived Australia 1824 on the convict ship Prince Regent.
Parents were Kenan Cummins and Elizabeth (nee Shelly)
I need to access information on the family unit. Also He has stated that there were 300 year old tombs of his family in the district. (this was in 1830) I would like to have some idea if the graves are still viable to visit and some history of family. I would be most grateful for any help. Marli ;) ???

Do you know what part of Co. Laois (Queens) the family lived ?

A trial would take place in the main town, but they could have lived somewhere else.

you would also need to know the family religion to search for parish records.

He was catholic. He was dragged from his native home by the existingpolicy of British Govt and convicted under the insurrection act for being out of his fathers house after curfew at 8pm night. He was 17 years old. He is quoted as saying 'I defy any body to say a word derogatory about my parents, who though not wealthy were respectable industrious persons. If the tombs in the old church yards of the locality where he was born ,were examined,it would be found that the name he bore was an honorable one. Some members of his family had been honored at their deaths by  costly and and substantial monuments and that they owned the soil which his parents had to pay rent for.' This was in 1829.
Trade = shepherd.Native place Queens County. Tried Maryborough (Port Laoise) 1823. Born in Kilkenny county 1804. I have a couple of conflicting items as in Kilkenny and ueens but as I do not know the area I am lost. Thank you for taking time to answer my inquiry.

Co. Kilkenny is to the south of Co. Laois, so maybe your Cummins family lived somewhere in the northern part of Co. Kilkenny if the trial took place in Port Laois.

I would think that trials for further south in the county would take place in Kilkenny city.

You would need to establish which townland or parish the family lived in to start checking for available parish records as not all parishes will have records going back as far as the dates you need.

Thank you Shane.I have no other advice on Counties only the one's listed as told by my Gg/father in correspondance.
I wll start with the counties around the area as I have downloaded a map from Rootsweb.
Your help was really appreciated.
I may have to end up coming over to search each graveyard.(Now that would be a lot of fun)  Regards Marli

Hi Marli,
I have walked all those graveyards in Laois, 3 years going to every town and village in Laois and finding little cemeteries in 'far flung places', but as in the cemeteries that you would have the most interest, the headstones were beyond reading in most cases.
The surname Cummins, as we 'loclas' would say, is not a Laois name, but a Kilkenny name, thus I think you search would seve best there.
Below are the Cummins I found in Laois cemeteries, but none go back far enough for your research.

Cummins John; 24/2/1955  Rossdorraugha
Catherine-wife; 17/2/1962
Carroll Mary Ann-her sister; 27/3/1956

Cummins William; 29/5/1904 (56) Rahandrick

Hello from Marli.
Thank you for your kind reply and information.
I did not know how hard this would be given that I had his birth date and fathers and mothers name and where he lived.(or purported to live).
I have come across one William Cummins at Shankill and an Eliza at Tiscoffin but only on the 1901 census which of course may be decendants of William but I have no link. There seems to be in Boris 'Shellys and Cummins' so will go town by town in Kilkenny till I recognise something closer knit.
Thank you once again.

remember that not all parishes will have records back to the date of William's baptism. Many rural RC records only cover back to the early 1830s, and only a few have complete records back to 1804. Of the 56 or so RC parishes which cover Kilkenny & Laois, only about 20 have records going back before 1810.. and some of these may have gaps.

Thank you Shane. I am not an easily frustrated person but am getting there.
Will plod along though. someone in the Cummins family may recognise the name Shelly and Cummins together in their tree.
Thank you once again. Marli
