Great Malvern Priory LOOKUP - BRIGHT Wyche
« on: Monday 07 February 11 04:46 GMT (UK) »
I'm an Australian living in America, but helping an English family with a genealogy problem - so I'm at a disadvantage!

I'm chasing a very elusive girl named Alice BRIGHT.

In the 1911 census she was 17, single, a domestic servant, born at The Wyche, Malvern.

So she was born abt 1893/1894.
In 1914 she had a child, and registered her name as Alice Bright.

We can't find her in the 1901 census (and I've read through a few hundred pages of the census in the area), and a civil registration can't be found for an Alice Bright in the area. Nothing is known of her before or after the above two points (1911 and 1914).

And so we're looking to baptism entries. It's a little confused but after searches in a few areas (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,419383.0.html) it has been suggested that the Wyche area people were often baptised at the 'Great Malvern Priory'.

If someone has access to these indexes, would they mind checking the Great Malvern Priory for an Alice BRIGHT abt 1894?

We're running out of options! (At least till the 2021 census release).

Many thanks,
matt

Hi Matt,

Not sure if it is of any relevance, but the only Alice Bright I can find born in 1914 March quarter, was in Coventry, and her mothers maiden name shows as Allbright.

This is from freebmd uk.  Sorry I don't have access to Ancestry or anything, so I can't look further.

Hi Matt

I've had a look at the Great Malvern Priory baptism register for you. Although Alice wasn't baptised there, it looks as if she had a brother Arthur William Bright who was baptised, on June 14 1896, son of Henry and Catherine Bright. Abode the Wyche. Father's occupation - Labourer.  I checked the baptisms from 1890 to 1901. Arthur was the only Bright.
Now you have Arthur's name and his parents perhaps you'll be able to find them on the 1901 census.

Thank you so much Nemo - this is a great lead. I'll be following up on it. It looks like this couple had a lot of children prior to 1891. But the 1896 birth shows they were still producing issue -from what can tell Catherine (Kate) died in 1897 the year after the baptism you uncovered.
Thank you again!
cheers,
matt

Quick question Nemo,
The family were at Hanley Wells in 1891 and had children prior to (and perhaps after) that date at this location. Can you tell me anything about whether there is a parish church (baptisms?) at this location? Genuki seems a little uninformative on these villages and it's difficult to tell whether they were large enough to support a parish church.
cheers,
matt

Hi Matt
I don’t recognise the name “Hanley Wells” but the parish of Hanley did stretch up to the Wyche and included Holy Well. In 1836 the church of St Peter’s Malvern Wells was built, so it is likely your Bright family were baptised there. If not then I guess St Gabriels, Hanley Swan, or St Mary’s, Hanley Castle.
This map shows you the location and extent of the nearby parishes

http://gis.worcestershire.gov.uk/website/ParishRegister/

As you’ll see from the above webpage, the History Centre in Worcester holds a microfilm of the Malvern Wells, St Peters baptisms. I may be going there next week, and if so, I'll at the film.

Hi Nemo I'm an idiot - they were at "Harnley Castle" in 1891.

Thanks Emjaybee. So Hanley Castle in 1891 and Mathon in 1901.
