?? Ruby Date and restore if possible please
« on: Tuesday 08 February 11 05:03 GMT (UK) »
I found this tiny photo under another in a locket - Please would you weave your magic over it - no more colour than there is already please (- well you know what I mean   :D   Don't mind you filling in all the bits the silverfish or whatever have eaten!!   ;) )

Would love to know who it is and have two possible starters

- one born 1887 is most likely given that this photo seems to be coloured in the original

 -   think the 1857 lady would be too old for this - she died in 1889 aged 32.

Hi Wiggy,

What a gorgeous little piccy...pity there isn't more of it  :-\

Never mind.  I actually wonder whether the date might be in the 1870s; although I can see a very puffy sleeve in the foreground, the high collar doesn't speak to me of the 1890s which is the period during which I would normally expect to see the sleeve.  An early 1870s date would fit with this being a photo of a teenage girl born 1857...

Anyway, it would be interesting to read what the real experts think, when they eventually wake up!

Cheers
Prue

Wow!!    Hope you are right Prue - thanks for you thoughts.

- if that is the 1857 lady that would fit as being of the first wife!!  did they do colour that early or has this been tinted maybe??

I've been trying to date this myself but need extra input - must say my first impressions were 1890s because of apparently puffed sleeves and frilly Jabot like front - but I would like to think you are correct Prue.

Wiggs! Hiya!

I've been staring at this for a while...I downloaded it to get a better view from a bit farther away...and I'm not sure this is a real portrait.

Prue? Could this be a stock picture? Of a boy in a Fauntleroy suit?

Because.....ringlets went out in the very early 1860s. And I have never, ever, seen a hairstyle on a woman that was swept straight back like this on a woman with ringlets. Or even without, until the 1880s. They all had a center part.

And the outfit doesn't look like a real fashion.

I may be all wet, but I think it's a boy.

Go ahead, shred me ;D

Cheers, I think,
China ;D

I don't think so China, for a couple of reasons:

1.  I think it's a girl  ;D
2.  Would anyone go to the trouble of painting up and then locketing a stock photo?

I reckon it's a photo of a young girl, wearing her hair down.  Maybe her hair was curly and naturally fell in ringlets?  My nana's was like that when she was a little girl.

Wiggy, is there anything on the back at all?

There is something odd isn't there - but in the book I am looking at there is a girl standing behind two women (cross looking women at that) and she has her hair swept back off her ears like that without part  - not exactly ringlets but certainly long hair loose down her back.  it is a 1894 photo

Very odd - and the awful thing is that  - now that you have said that China, I am wondering if I have posted this photo before . . . . (- oh mother the memory has gone again!!   ;D  ::) )

Prue,
Certainly this particular photo has been taken off something with quite thick card - but it, the card, has been stripped away as much as possible to allow it to go into the locket.  The centre is still thick but the edges are quite thin and frail - no writing left.  and just the shape you see.

If it is a girl, how old do you think - about 8 - 10??

What if it's a stock photo that came with the locket? They sell photo frames etc with photos in them.

Well, if it's a girl, there's only one dating clue I can see....the big shoulders. And without being able to see the rest of the sleeve I could only guess that it's the gigot sleeve of the mid 1890s, and not a kickup of a few years previous, and not the balloon sleeve of a few years later. :P :P :P

If it's a real portrait featuring ladies' fashion, it for sure isn't before about 1890.

Over to you :D
