As has been said earlier, even when the wireless has been turned on there is still a need to set up your connection.
With your 'yellow wire' connected between the router and your laptop, settings have still to me made on your computer prior to going wireless!
(That is why I asked for make/model of your router)
If you have internet supplied/connected over a phone line against one using a 'cable connection', a different type of router is needed.
I take it your router was supplied by your telephone company?

No via a well known mobile company,  same company I had with my first wireless which I could use cable free.

The point I was trying to make about phone company -
The equipment was supplied by company who is supplying the service, rather than going out and buying?

Following on from Ray's link: http://www.howtomendit.com/answers.php?id=124446
It appears that a number of people having same problem as yourself, ie Fn+F1 key not working.
(Pressing Fn then F1 should bring up a box on screen with option to turn on/off wireless function)
To remedy this it advises to visit manufacturers website to download program.
(But please read Ray's link prior to making decision) ::)

What a morning I,ve had and a little bit forward.   Took the laptop to the Computer man where I bought my computer from 2 years ago, after speaking to him on Wednesday,  Shop closed no one there and no notice to say when he would be back.

So took the laptop to the Orange shop and a helpful young man turned the wireless on.  Came home no connection without the yellow cable.   Went to the computer shop in village (after having lugged the machine to Cheltenham via bus) who said the computer needs to be configured which will mean more expense as he will have to come to me.

So decided to buy a longer cable so I can take the laptop to my sofa if I want to watch a IPlayer etc until I can afford the £40.00 quoted.

Is there any way I can do this myself?

Do you have any computer savvy friends you could call on?

When you have entified which modem you have, click on the appropriate picture.
This should help you set everything up.

Hi

Carry out reply #13 then report back
(I only need to know at this point that you can connect to the router control panel as per reply #13))

Also need to know make/model of router.
It will either be on the cardboard box it came in
and/or the printed instructions in the box it came in
and/or on the router itself
and/or when you log onto 192.168.x.x (or whatever that will be)

Ray

For security, you(we?) need to set security settings on the router. (and laptop)
