Hi Deb, Thanks to you,I am getting a good foundation for understanding the Murphys.
My Gt. Grandfather married Lily Murphy in 1913 in Swansea and he was under pressure from Lily to provide a private mortgage for Lily's Mum,and to suspend interest payments to him by her during the course of WW 1.
My GGF and Lily had an interesting relationship. There was about 38 years age difference between them.
Do you know what religion the Murphys were ? There were a lot of Madonna and Child objects in the house inventory done at their home by my GGF in 1919,1 year before his death, which suggests Lily was R.C.
Thank you for your time and energy Deb.

Cheers,

Philip

Hi Philip

I am not sure what their religion was ... I can't find a baptism for Thomas Murphy bc 1817 Bideford.

there is a possible for Elizabeth ...
IGI extracted
Elizabeth MARTIN d/o Thos and Eliz. Martin
3 MAY 1818, Ilfracombe

Murphy does sound rather Irish though  ;D

In 1841 I can only find 3 Murphys living in Bideford:

Ann Murphy, 65 waher woman, born in county ..living in New street

(Your) THOMAS MURPHY 25 carver and guilder , born in county,,,,, Mill Street

Ann Murphy 9, independent, born in county ...living in Unon Street in the home of Naomi Wrey, 25 dressmaker and Sarah Whitefield , 65
