Launceston Industrial School for girls
« on: Monday 14 February 11 00:12 GMT (UK) »
Where can I find the records for the Launceston Industrial School for girls?  I am looking for Rose Senior who was sent there in November 1886 for 2 years, she was 13.  She  disappears from any records after her sentencing.

Also can anyone enlighten me as to the Mission Church in Launceston 1885.  I have a letter written to Grace Brown which asks if she is still involved in the Mission Church and saying they believed it was going to be a grand building.

Thanks,
Heather

You may like to contact the Launceston family history society, they maybe able to help.
http://www.launceston.tasfhs.org/branch.html

There is also a book -
Tasmanian industrial schools and reformatories by Joyce Purtscher. ISBN 0646217437
(Tasmanian Industrial Schools and reformatories. Girls Industrial School Hobart 1864-1910; Boy's Industrial School West Hobart 1869 - 1898; Girls Industrial School Launceston 1878 - 1899; Girls Training School (Reformatory) Hobart 1881 - 1898; Boy's Training School 1869 - 1896).

You probably have seen the two articles in the Launceston Examiner (via Trove). If you have not here are a couple of links -

Christian Mission Church Launceston.

(Founder) Henry Reed, 1806 - 1880 He was a land holder, ship owner, merchant and philanthropist.

He instigated the independent Christian Mission Church (in Wellington street), 'a break away' from the Wesleyan Methodist group.
The Christian Mission Church was opened in April 1884, four years after Reed's death.
You are able to read in more detail regarding the Launceston Christian Mission Church here at Gordon Moyes website

Thanks for the information on both those queries.  I do have the Examiner articles which is how I know she was there.
Will check out the websites and the church information.
Cheers,
Heather
