HELP PLEASE! Looking for Poland family in Liverpool 1890's
« on: Monday 14 February 11 23:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi!

I'm looking to find out about my Grandmothers family.

All the info. that I have,  is her father was Edward Poland,  mother Helen Hudson.

My Grandmother was Elizabeth Edith Poland b.1893 Liverpool, d.1974 in New Zealand.

She came to Canada at sometime and married at Arnprior, Ont, Canada, my Grandfather Joseph S. J. Fraser.  I have this marriage cert. info.

This is all that I know of her family,  though I heard her parents may have died or may have even been killed tragically.  Elizabeth may have come to Canada with siblings at this time,  I'm not sure!

THANK YOU ahead of time for any help that I may receive!

Darrin in Canada!

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

There is no birth for her on freebmd and no marriage shown for her parents

www.freebmd.org.uk

Are you sure she was born in England

There is a tree on Ancestry with Elizabeth shown - details as you have given above

However - whoever has compiled the tree appears to have Edward Poland married in 1843.  Given that Elizabeth was not born until 50yrs later ..................

In 1843 - an Edward Poland married Mary Moran in Manchester

Hi  :)

I see that she married in Ontario in 1912 and her father was deceased by then.  I don't see her definitely on any passenger list  pre 1912 or the UK 1901 or Canadian 1911 censuses so far.

I'm starting to suspect that she might have been a Home Child so I've PMed the Canadian Mod to see if she might be able to find anything out at that end.

Hi Darrin

There are 3 entries for births for Elizabeth Polands, but they don't correspond with you date, but here goes!

Elizabeth Poland 4Q 1884 Liverpool 8b 18
Elizabeth Poland 2Q 1888 Liverpool 8b 101
Elizabeth Poland 1Q 1896 W.Derby (Lancashire) 8b 528

But as CaroleW says, no marriages for you date in Liverpool.

Good luck,

I've found a possible on a passenger list in February 1904 The Bavarian from Liverpool to Halifax. Arrived 27 Feb 1904

There seem to be quite a lot of children so looks like Home Children

Isabella Poland, aged 11 and Eliz Poland, aged 7 are on page 8

From the 1901 census - parents of Isabella and Elizabeth were H Poland (male) and Agnes

1891 shows him as Henry

No deaths for an Edward Poland (and her father was dead by 1912)  but death of a Harry Poland, West Derby in  Sept q, 1903, aged 43 and also Agnes Poland same RD, same  quarter, same year, aged 41.

Might she have got her parents' names confused as she was so young? It has happened before.

There's no one else on the passenger lists that is remotely like her and this E  or Eliz Poland seems to be the only one on the 1901 in Liverpool who bears any resemblance to her.

Nothing on the 1911 Canadian census  which is strange unless she went by the surname of the family who took her in

Yes these are home children, good thinking JL ....

Mrs. Birt's party headed for Knowlton, Quebec so that would have been the location of the receiving home.
and there's another lad on board as well transcribed as  Alexader A Poland

June quarter 1890 - Alexander Adamson Poland  / W. Derby  / 8b  252

also Agnes T. ( Agnes Jean)
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/home-children/001015-110.01-e.php?PHPSESSID=9raqjmcj6grfkrb0lqvubieat0&q1=poland

Yes these children often couldn't remember details about their parents. so not unusual to see made up forenames. May also have been a middle name though...I'll see what else we can find on the siblings and what they may have stated for parents in their marriages...but you've probably found one or both of them already.

Marriages Sept Q. 1880 has Harry Poland / Agnes Brown on page W. Derby /8b 595  so looks as though you are right perhaps the last names were all she could remember, at just 7
