Mary Lafferty was Hugh's sister. This marriage on the IGI:
19 Oct 1851, Kilbirnie, Ayr  Henry Lafferty and Mary Pollan

There is a possible marriage for Hugh and Jane on the IGI:
24 Dec 1852, Neilston, Renfrewshire - Hugh Poland and Jean Mullen

Jane Polland died in Kilbirnie on 8 Sept 1860, aged 24.
Her parents are given as George McMillan, weaver and Rosanna McMillan

I don't see a death for Hugh at the moment so can't find his parents but will follow up on Mary

Mary Lafferty died in Bannockburn in 1875. Parents were given as Edward Poland, ploughman, deceased  and Mary, maiden surname, Gribbon.

So, these are likely to be Hugh's parents, Harry/Henry's grandparents and Elizabeth's great grandparents.

Given the name of her first daughter, this is the best match for Agnes Brown and her parents in 1871:

52 Mount Pleasant, Liverpool
RG10/3784/47/27

Joseph Brown, 50, merchant - dried fruit, b. Derbyshire, Tibshelf
Margaret, 46, b. Cheshire, Claughton
Susan, 19, b. Rochdale
Emma, 17
Alice A, 16
Caroline, 11
Margaret, 10
Agnes J, 8
Amy C, 6
Florence, 5
John Henry, nephew, 15, clerk, b. Nottingham
Emma Griffin, serv, 29, cook, b. Ireland
Anne Hughes, serv,22, nurse, b. Anglesea, Beaumaris
Anne Jones, serv, 23, housemaid, b. Anglesea, Harlech (!)

Children were  born Liverpool where not stated

Above not so - all that typing  ::) ::) ::)

The marriage cert of Agnes and Henry/Harry would show their fathers.

The Pope family tree on Ancestry seems to have the most accurate info but there they have Agnes's father as James Brown. No mother given.

Agnes is shown as Agnes Jean Brown.

Pure speculation but given the confusion with the Brown/Walker on some of Elizabeth's sibs' marriages, there is an interesting family on the 1871:

32 Cecil Street, West Derby, Liverpool
RG10/3841/13/19

James Walker, 38, joiner, b. Cheshire
Margaret, 30, b. Scotland, Fife
Agnes, 8, b. Lancashire, Liverpool

(I've not found this family in Liverpool on the 1881 so they are a possible. There is also an interesting Margaret Brown on the 1861 in Liverpool - RG9/2683/37/6)

wow, so much found while we were sleeping!
From the IGI extracted files for parents Harry Poland & Agnes ( Henry/Harry interchangeable)

Christening of Margaret Poland  March 21, 1881 St Peter's, Liverpool, Lancashire

Henrietta Poland b. July 14 1884 Christened October 4 1886  St Peter's, Liverpool

Henry James Hugh Poland  b. Aug. 28 1886 Christened October 4 1886  with Henrietta
I imagine they were glad to have baptised him early...but not sure if this is he as should be two, and listed as one...SeptQ 1889 Poland Henry/ W. Derby / 8b  212
