my friends brick wall
« on: Monday 14 February 11 23:45 GMT (UK) »

Can anyone help with this family please?  Trying to find out about her family history  for the last 20++ years has driven my friend to distraction and is beginning to have the same effect on me since she asked me to help some years ago. This is a little long winded but here goes:
Information we have so far is as follows:
Thomas Towey born in Mayo/Roscommon in 1852. ? Ballaghdereen.  Father: Patrick Towey & Mother Catherine?
Catherine and Thomas were in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, England from about 1871 (not sure if Patrick was there). Marriage cert of Thomas Towey to a Mary Loyden in Longton 8/1/1874 states that father Patrick is deceased. 1881 census shows Catherine Towey residing with Thomas and his Family and 1891 shows Thomas still there but cannot find Catherine despite many searches both census and death records.
Thomas’s wife Mary died in 1900 and it said by older members of the family that Thomas and Catherine returned to Ireland soon afterwards and that he remarried there.
We have found only one record of a Thomas Towey born in Ballaghdereen in 1852, Father Patrick Towey but Mother Bridget ???  We then surmised that he may have married twice (Thomas being from First marriage) and researched other marriages for Patrick Towey and found a marriage For a Patrick Towey (widow) and a Catherine Bones in Ballaghdereen in 1865. Further research showed children of Patrick and Catherine between 1865 and 1869 but all had died within first year of life. We have not obtained any of these records as yet in the hope that someone may be able to remove a brick or two from this wall so that we are not ordering the wrong certs.  Any help much appreciated
