Gattward/Hudgin
« on: Friday 18 February 11 19:57 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Emily Harriet Gattward or Gatward was born in London abt 1890, according to marriage records she married James Joseph O'Brien in january 1919 (In London)  and then married Ernest Hudgin in Toronto in november 1919.

I can't find any record of her arriving in Canada or the US.

I'm adamant that she is the same woman so either she was a widow or a bigamist.

Emily is stated to be a spinster on her marriage to Ernest Hudgin. Her parents are given as William Gatward and Edith Leacock and she was b. London England. She is 25.

Do these parents match what you know about the Emily who married Mr O'Brien?

Emily H. Obrien on the Scandinavian arriving Quebec City 18 May 1919 with a final destination of Toronto.  She is joining husband James Obrien and the rest is very hard to read.  If you start at the back of the passenger list and find pg 17 (just a few pages back as they have a few categories that are each numbered separately) this entry is at the bottom of the page.  She is on a ship with returning soldiers and their dependants which could mean that you can search for her husband's WWI attestation papers at the same site previously given.

Can't see a death for James in Ontario.

Looks like Emily H O'Brien arrived in Canada on May 18, 1919.  She lists James as her husband and she is headed for Toronto, Ontario.

Here's part of the manifest, it's really hard to read.....

She came on the Scandanvian, arriving in Quebec, sailing from Liverpool

Most likely her first husband died - just because you can't find a death registration easily doesn't mean the event didn't occur.  I haven't been able to find evidence (except for gravestones) of some deaths between 1915 and 1921 in Ontario.  I assume that some records were lost or unreadable for transcription.

Do you have Emily's marriage certificate in England?  Was James from Canada?
