A very faded picture
« on: Saturday 19 February 11 14:09 GMT (UK) »
Would anyone be able to help making this photo clearer please?  He has to be one of my Franklin relatives from Bedford/Biggleswade.  The photo was taken at The Studio, Shortmead Street, Biggleswade,  measuring 5.5 cm x 9 cm, and is mounted on a card.  Also is it possible to suggest a date for it?  Not to mention the sort of regiment?  I should be very grateful
Many thanks

2 things you need to do.
1.put a link to this on the armed forces board for an ID.it would help them if you could give a closeup scan of his collar dogs & cap badge.
2.show us the back,as he's in uniform it doesn't help us to date this so we need to date it from the cardstock, however the general style of this looks 1880's at present.

the Regiment looks like the Royals Warwicks from what I can see but the armed forces chaps will have a better idea.

Mmm.......I was looking for a studio logo but it looks like he was a bit mean when he bought these.
I'll have to stick with 1880's.

Dear Jim
The Studio logo at the bottom of the photo is all there is - just The Studio, Shortmead Street, Biggleswade.  Perhaps I should have a go at scanning through the 1881 Census to see if I can find Shortmead Street.

a clean, but this is a very low dpi scan (72dpi) that has been badly compressed. I don't want to smooth it out as I think it loses dimension so it is still a bit blocky. Also I dont like to use filters  ;D

Dear Irene
Believe it or not I did scan it at 300 dpi - I sometimes wonder what my computer gets up to, as I have had this comment before.  I suspect it's simply my lack of computer skill, in the end.
But thank you, thank you for a wonderful transformation - he looks really good.
Incidentally, I googled and found the Biggleswade History site which was really helpful, as there was a history of Shortmead Street.  The most likely candidate for the photographer is James Phillips, who moved into 60 Shortmead Street in 1881.
