Unknown soldier
« on: Saturday 19 February 11 14:40 GMT (UK) »
Dear All
This is one of my Franklin rellies from the Bedford/Biggleswade area.  Could anyone please identify what regiment he was serving in, please?  His cap badge seems to be a horse.
Many thanks

A really high resolution scan of just his left shoulder should tell you. It could be for the Bedfordshire Regiment – his home regiment. Permanent depots were introduced from 1873, which increased the chances that a man would volunteer for his local regiment.

The collar badge could be theirs too – a stag:

But the only cap badge I can find for them has a stag within a Maltese cross. So it may be for a part-time battalion or was a short-lived design.

You should put a link on the photograph section as someone may be able to date it. You should include the back if you can. The uniform is circa the 1880s or slightly later.

Dear Ken
Thank you very much - the Bedfordshire Regiment would make sense - my grandfather joined them some years later.  Thanks for your help.  Yes I have posted it on the Photo section.
Thanks

Dear Ken
No, at the moment I don't know who it is.  I was hoping someone could give me an idea of date, and what his rank might be.  It has been suggested he is in the Bedfordshire Regiment.

Was he in a cavalry regiment?         Could the horse represent a cavalry regiment?
