"New Orphan House"
« on: Sunday 20 February 11 13:36 GMT (UK) »
In 1871, I have Elizabeth and Mary Brewer (1856 and 1860, Kinver/Whittington, Staffordshire) in the "New Orphan House" in Clifton, Gloucestershire.

I've lost both after 1871,

Does anyone know what this Institution prepared the Inmates for (if anything)?
Were the destined for the Empire/Colonies as Servants?

Wikipaedia has detailed entry on New Orphan Houses in Bristol. That may give you some guidelines.
The entry appears to be about Ashley Down but that is very near Clifton.
It's a start anyway :D

There is a marriage of an Elizabeth Brewer, in Clifton in Jan-Mar quarter of 1876.  She married either  Albert Henry Griffer or William Frank Hippett.

There is a marriage of a Mary Brewer in Clifton in Oct-Dec quarter of 1875 (from your date she would only have been 15, but perhaps she told a white lie about her age).  She married either Charles Bryant or Charles Carle.

So if you look for Elizabeth Griffer or Hippett on the 1881 census, and Mary Bryant or Carle on the 1881 census you may find these are your ladies.

I haven't checked, but is it possible that if Elizabeth and Mary are the people you are researching, that their husbands were also at the New Orphan House.

Hi Again

It's possible that the marriages were not "your" ladies, as on the 1871 census there was at least one other Elizabeth Brewer living with her family in Clifton.

Thanks for the info people.

Unfortunately, neither of the marriages panned out  :'(.

But at least I know a lot more about the Orphan houses.

Mike

Later: digging in the BMDs it's possible that Mary Brewer died in 1875. Need DCert to be sure.
Still looking for Elizabeth  :)

I wonder if that means she died in the orphanage, if not it could be that Elizabeth was the informant.

If you do a search on Ancestry for Elizabeth born 1856 in Kinver, you'll get quite a few results.  One of them might be the person you are looking for.
