CHARLES, Deskford b. 1767 Cullen
« on: Monday 21 February 11 00:02 GMT (UK) »
Dear Members,

I am a descendant of Deskford CHARLES. He was born in 1767 at Cullen and had at least 5 brothers and sisters.

Parents: Peter Charles and Jane Porteais.

Deskford  married 3 times and moved to Chatham, Kent where he had 4 known children and lived to 80 years of age.

Would like to chat to any known relatives.

Kind regards
Steve

I don't know the name, but I have seen Deskford (pronounced Dess-kirt) used as a forename before. One of the factors to the Earl of Seafield had a daughter called Deskford Wilson. Of course, the Earl of Seafield was based at Cullen House just outside Cullen, so there may have been a connection. I only know this because my Wilson's were from Deskford as were the family of factors, probably joined somewhere in the 1600's there and more than likely an off-shoot of the Innes's way back.

The Surname Charles can't have been that common up here then. I haven't seen that many in the records!
Banffshire - WILSON, RIACH, CALDER, MUIRY, PETERKIN, CRAIB, OGG, CRUICKSHANK, FARQUHAR, COPLAND, HAY, SHAW, HIND, STRATHDEE, MORRISON, WISEMAN, MOIR, MILNE, SHEPHERD, BLACK, BRUCE, RAMSAY, PEARSON, MCPHERSON, SHEED, MCANDIE
Morayshire - MAVER, RAMSAY, PHINN, SIMPSON
Aberdeenshire - MCINTOSH, GILLAN
Kincardineshire - DUTHIE
Ross-shire - MCANGUS, MCKENZIE, TARRELL,
Inverness-shire - MACKAY, FERGUSON, MACCUISH, BEATON, GILLIES, MACDONALD, MACVICAR, MACDIARMID
Louth - KIERAN, KANE, ENGLISHBY, FEGAN

Are you still researching Deskford Charles?

I am  a   direct descendant of Alexander Charles of Fordyce who died in 1879 aged 84, so was born about 1794/5. I am interested in seeing if it is possible to establish a link between the Charles family at Cullen and the family at Fordyce. As the two locations are very close and the name is not that common, there must be quite a high probability of a link.
