Grange Cemetery
« on: Tuesday 22 February 11 10:19 GMT (UK) »
In my efforts to track the Harpole family of Laois, I have been informed that some of them might buried in Grange Cemetery, near Tullow, Carlow.

I wonder if some local person could give me directions to the cemetery, as I would like to visit today.
I would be travelling from Portlaoise, so I can approach from either Carlow  or Castledermot into Tullow.

Thanking you,
Jack

Grange RC church (Church of St John the Baptist) is located at Grangechapel and located about 5km north west of Tullow and on the north east of the road from Castledermot (R418). The cemetery is adjacent.

see :  Tullow to Grangechapel  (google map)

church and graveyard on google street view

You can also see the church and graveyard on the old OSI Maps - Grange Church & School  (click the 6" or 25" options)

Hi Jack.
The Hartpole family of Laois had a castle at Shrule, which is a couple of miles from Carlow town between Knockbeg College and Grange Co Laois.  There are Hartpoles buried here I believe in the old graveyard, but I dont know how easy it is to access this graveyard.  Do you have a time frame for your Hartpole family in Laois, or why you believe they are buried in Grange Co Carlow?
Shrule Castle would be very close (about a half mile)   from Grange Co Laois.

A quick google search of Hartpole (Hartpoole, Hartpold) of  Shrule will yield lots of information on this particular family

Hi Irishrose,

Thank you for that information. At a request from a lady in England who is tracing the Harpole Dynasty and was having a bit of trouble putting things together in Ireland, I agreed to assist in any way possible with her search.
The time period would be 1800 and earlier.
Again, many thanks,
Jack
