married in the manse,Selkirk
« on: Thursday 24 February 11 11:17 GMT (UK) »
Have found out that my Granny worked as a domestic in
The Haining, Selkirk and married in the Manse, Selkirk Parish Church 28 March 1894 by a James Farquharson, Minister of Selkirk.
What I'd like to find out is what her address was at that time.
All she has given is Brownmoor District.   In the census form
her name is listed but no address.  Because she worked in the 'big house' were the staff not allowed to give the address?  Her father was a hedger at Bowhill for many years
and his father before him, but she hasn't given this address
either.  How can I find out more?

Hi tattiehowker,I take it The Haining was the "big house" mentioned. Is it possible she was living in as a domestic servant and this was her address.

Yes, she probably would have stayed at the Haining but it still
isn't listed as her address and her address isn't listed on the
census form at that time - just her name.

By coincidence I too have an ancestor who worked at the Haining around the same time.

You can find Brownmoor on the ordnance survey 6 inch series maps available at the National Library of Scotland website.
