David and Rosetta Smaje were my 4 x great grandparents.  They both originated from Amsterdam and came to the UK in 1844.  They first settled in London's East End before moving to the Wirral.  Three of their children (Joseph, Catherine and Barnett) moved to the North West with them.  At least two of their children (Henry and Julia) remained in the East End.  Another son, Louis, settled in Hull.  I am a descendant of their daughter, Julia.  She married a gentile and so was disowned by her Jewish family.

I am curious about something as this is my family history. I happened to hear something on the BBC about the history of gin and that gin was sometimes referred to as 'cordials'. I was wondering whether the cordial makers often referred to might be gin as opposed to the fruit we associate cordial as meaning nowadays.
