Llechach Farm - Where is it?
« on: Wednesday 20 April 05 07:58 BST (UK) »
Greetings from Australia,

I'm looking for some advice, please. Is it possible to research online the history of a particular farm? The following is what I know:

Howell POWELL b.ca.1760 Breconshire. Married Elinor (?) b.1768 Breconshire (dates calculated from gravestone) First found child, Elinor, was born Merthyr Cynog 1799. Andrew born Merthyr Cynog 1801. At this time they were living at Llechach Farm, which I think is in either Lower Chapel or Merthyr Cynog, can you tell me which, pls?

I would like to find out how they came to own a farm and whether it had been passed down to the eldest son.

Andrew, the son, continued to live at Llechach Farm after the death of his parents (1828 Elinor and 1838 Howell) and brought up three families there before moving to Arch Farm, Llantrissent, Mon. sometime after 1865 - reason unknown.

Many thanks,
OzzieJoan

Hello there, I wondered if the following posted in the rootsweb archives a few years ago in the Dyfed list archives would help as the discussion is about the same place and gives information on the location of the farm:

Hello Jim

I have that 1861 census showing Howell Watkins in Llechach with my
Powell family!!!

Llechach is a farm listed in the census as being in Merthyr Cynog ,
Breconshire but actually it is in Lower Chapel(otherwise know as
Llandefailof Fach).

I have some photographs of it (from a distance) which I took last year.
The farmhouse has been empty for some time but was in the middle of
being renovated.

As you say Howell Watkins was listed as being in Lechach then I presume
you have seen the census entry??
Andrew Powell the head of the household at the time is my GG
grandfather.
I have been trying to find out more about Howell Watkins because there
is evidence that some Watkins family is related to the Powells and I
wondered if he was related or just staying over as the census shows him
as being a carter.

I can send you a map showing the location of Llechach and can scan in
some photos if you like.

What a coincidence - I couldn't believe it when I saw your e-mail.

I would love to have more information from you.

I will send the rest direct to you as they will be as attachments and
you can't do that via the list.

Look forward to hearing from you. Where are you located?

Pat

Many thanks for that MarMnkly. The Pat Powell mentioned is, in fact, a distant cousin of my husband, Brian Powell, and I had already seen that posting.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated, but I'm looking for information from a little further back, when Howell POWELL was in residence there.

Llechach is now owned by Thomas Bros. Coedmawr (type that into search & you'll get details ) my great grandmother bought it in the 50's....Mary Ann Phillips (nee Pritchard) was then farmed by Edgar her son, then David Morgan - though you didn't ask for that history, sorry. Have photos at different stages through this period and it wasn't gutted until late 1990's.

I'm not sure whether I should be writing this here, as I have nothing whatsoever to contribute to the discussion.

I'm simply tickled by the last contributor's "nome de plume".

The potato's flower is quite pretty, but mostly ignored and underappreciated. I trust this won't be the case with Blodyn Tatws.

Welcome to Rootschat.
